On Monday, April 7, at the invitation of the International Relations and European Affairs (IREA) Student Society, Ambassador Omar Amer Youssef, Egyptian Ambassador to Greece, addressed Deree students in the Arts Center Auditorium in a discussion of “Egypt’s Foreign Policy: Navigating the Uncertain Geopolitical Shifts.”
The Ambassador shared a wealth of information with the students regarding various projects connecting Greece with Egypt, including the GREGY Interconnector, which will transfer solar and wind-generated energy from Egypt to Greece and through Greece to other European countries, and the planned seasonal work visas for individuals seeking seasonal work in Greece through Egypt. The Ambassador was especially generous in his responses to students’ questions, including those on sensitive diplomatic issues such as the Egyptian counter-proposal to that of US President Donald Trump regarding the reconstruction of Gaza.
This event followed from the Egyptian Embassy’s welcoming of IREA students to the Embassy in December of 2024; the Ambassador extended an invitation again for a future such visit, and we hope to have the opportunity to host him again on our campus. This event was organized in collaboration with the Institute of Global Affairs and the Office of Public Affairs.
