Deree Commencements 2020 & 2021: Optimism and Hope at the Deree Ceremonies
The evenings of Thursday and Friday July 1-2, 2021 were special occasions for the entire ACG community. The most anticipated event of events, Deree Commencement, having skipped a year due to the pandemic, concluded with great success! The ceremonies were rolled out with the utmost precautions against COVID-19, and hence the number of guests was limited to the close families of the graduates and of course the Members of the ACG Community as well as distinguished guests. 869 undergraduate and graduate students in total, from 32 countries across the globe, gathered at the ACG Stadium and were applauded for their years of hard work, perseverance, determination and outstanding performance that led them to this pivotal moment in college life, Graduation Day!
More specifically, on Thursday, July 1, the Ceremony was held for the undergraduate students who completed their studies this year. Respectively, on Friday, July 2, the diploma awarding ceremony of the undergraduate and postgraduate students who graduated in 2020 took place, which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the same ceremony, the postgraduate students who completed their studies this year received their diplomas. More information here.
ACG 150 event | Digital Leadership is Not Just Digital
The role of leadership in the successful implementation of digital transformation was at the center of the online panel discussion organized by the ACG Institute for Hellenic Growth and Prosperity and the ACG Office of Public Affairs. Held on April 13, 2021, in the framework of the ACG150 plan, this panel discussion brought together three business leaders who shared their points of view on how the digital age requires the leadership “handbook” to be re-written.
The event featured Theodosis Michalopoulos, CEO of Microsoft Greece, Cyprus & Malta, Michael Tsamaz, Chairman & CEO, OTE Group and Katerina Vlachou, Managing Director of Mondelēz Greece, Cyprus. The discussion was moderated by Joanna Konstantinou, Associate Lecturer II, School of Business and Economics, Deree-ACG, Digital Leadership Coach.

ACG 150 event | Public Health, the Greek Economy and Political Liberty: Balance, Priorities and Policies in the Age of Pandemics
In an effort to foster conversation about how public policy can ensure balance between the demands of health, economic prosperity and political liberty, the ACG Institute for Hellenic Growth & Prosperity presented a group of thought leaders from fields that must communicate and cooperate in order to protect individual, social and cultural health, in a captivating panel discussion, held on April 6, 2021. In the framework of the ACG 150 plan, top experts in public policy, health and business discussed challenges, opportunities and prospects in all three fields.

ACG Community Service Days – Spring 2021
Blood drive, in collaboration with NKUA and AUEB in support of NIMTS public hospital
In the midst of the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and in the context of the ACG Community Service Days – Spring 2021, a 2-day blood drive was organized at Deree-The American College of Greece, on March 30-31, 2021, in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Athens University of Economics and Business. The registrations on the online platform were fully booked and around eighty donors engaged in this small act of giving. Because “we are all somebody’s blood type”!
Work-family balance: challenges and solutions for the birth deficit in Greece – Round Table Discussion
Organized by the Institute of Public Health – The American College of Greece (ACG) and the NGO HOPEgenesis, with the support of the ACG Office of Public Affairs, the panel discussion titled “Work-family balance: challenges and solutions for the birth deficit in Greece” addressed the socio-economic impact of reduced birth rates in Greece as well as its causes, related challenges and possible solutions.
Held Thursday, February 25, 2021, the event featured Deputy Minister for Health Zoe Rapti, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyannis, NGO HOPEgenesis Founder/President Stephanos Chandakas and the Dean of the School of Business & Economics of ACG, Dr. Annie Triantafyllou. The discussion was moderated by Professor Panagiotis Behrakis, Director of the Institute of Public Health – The American College of Greece.
ACG 150 | The role of Diplomacy in Economic Development
Organized by the Institute for Hellenic Growth and Prosperity of The American College of Greece (ACG), in collaboration with the ACG Institute of Global Affairs, the panel discussion titled “The role of Diplomacy in Economic Development” was held on Thursday, February 4, 2021, aiming at understanding the role of diplomacy in economics through specific examples gained through conversations with and between heads of mission, public sector officials, and industry. The event was part of ACG 150, a visionary strategic plan to leverage education for economic and social impact, as well as to consolidate, support and expand ACG’s activities in performing research, creating technology and fostering innovation.
Kostas Fragogiannis, Deputy Minister for Economic Diplomacy & Openness, Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the keynote speaker was, while the panel included H.E. Charlotte Sammelin, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Soosuk Lim, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Hellenic Republic and H.E. Mark Allen, Ambassador of Canada to the Hellenic Republic. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Michalis Psalidopoulos, Chair of the Advisory Board, Institute for Hellenic Growth and Prosperity, The American College of Greece.
Community Service Days – Fall 2020
Blood drive, a joint effort in support of ACG Blood Bank and G. Gennimatas, Evaggelismos and Ag. Savvas Hospitals
In the midst of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and in the context of the ACG Community Service Days – Fall 2020, a 3-day blood drive was organized at Deree-The American College of Greece, on December 1- 3, 2020.
With the motto “Heroes come in all types” and after a strong collaborative outreach, 145 ACG community members as well as ACG business partners and friends participated and 122 blood units were collected for the ACG Blood Bank and our nation’s hospitals.
Students of the Deree International Honors Program Society and other Deree students created this video to encourage all of us to become blood donors and offer the greatest gift – life!

Following the representation of The American College of Greece (ACG) in the UN Millennium Fellowship Program 2020 by eleven Deree students, the Fellows and the ACG Office of Public Affairs organized an online symposium aiming to increase awareness about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Held on November 11-13, 2020, the UN SDGs Symposium: Exploring the DiverCity of Athens was a 3-day event targeting a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, professionals, as well as representatives from sustainability-related NGOs, local authorities and academia.
The event addressed four of the 17 Goals: SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, SGD 5 – Gender Equality, SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12 – Sustainable Consumption and Production, presenting hands-on solutions for a sustainable city of Athens, gender equality, diversity, sustainable consumption, elimination of food waste and sustainable fashion.
The Symposium was held under the auspices of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), the Millennium Campus Network (MCN), and the Millennium Fellowship Program and was supported by the Deree Psychology Society, the Deree Sociology Society and the Deree International Honors Program Society.
US Elections 2020: What is at Stake for the US and the World
On the occasion of the upcoming US Elections, the Institute of Global Affairs, The American College of Greece (IGA) and the Institute of International Relations, Panteion University (IRR) organized an interactive dialogue titled “US Elections: What is at Stake for the US and the World” between the Heads of IGA & IIR, Director Dr. Haris Vlavianos & Chairman Dr. Harry Papasotiriou, respectively. The event was held in hybrid format on October 15, 2020 at the ACG Events Hall, with the support of the Deree International Relations and European Affairs Society & the Deree Student Association.

The Voice of Renewables and Parity Platform organised WINDMission Greece 2019 conference, held in Athens on 14/15 October at Deree – The American College of Greece, under the auspices of Hellenic Wind Energy Association ELETAEN / HWEA.
Greece enjoys a remarkable wind resource with local average wind speeds (at hub height) often exceeding the 8–10 m/s, especially in the Aegean Sea islands and on mountain ridges on the mainland. More than 3 GW of wind capacity has already been installed and is operating in Greece, while 4 billion € of additional investments are expected by 2030 for new projects, given national and EU RES penetration targets.
As the country is pushing hard to speed up development of its wind energy capacity, WINDMission Greece gathered together Greek wind energy stakeholders and provided excellent networking opportunities across the entire spectrum, from legislation makers through investors and EPCs.

On March 15-17, 2019 The American College of Greece had the pleasure of hosting “International Law School Mediation Tournament”, organized by International Academy of Dispute Resolution (INADR). More than 250 law students from Europe, Asia, Canada & USA arrived on campus to compete in an international competition designed to help them understand the value of resolving disputes through mediation. Fifty four (54) teams from thirty (30) different countries got mediator training, had the opportunity to network with other students from around the world and the unique opportunity to introduce themselves in the world of mediation, which is critical to a successful professional practice after graduation.

The Culture of Integration

The “Culture of Integration” by the EUNIC Cluster Athens project has been a response to the refugee crisis; it financially supported five targeted actions in the fields of “libraries, education and the arts” with the aim to contribute to the social and cultural integration of the newly- arrived people as well as to support the local receiving communities in coping with the corresponding challenges. These actions were designed and implemented by civil society organisations upon selection and funding by EUNIC Athens. The results of these actions will were presented in the final event as best practice examples aiming to raise awareness and to boost public dialogue on related issues.
The “Culture of Integration” project and final event have been co-organised by the Goethe-Institut Athen, the British Council, the House of Cyprus, the Austrian Embassy, the Norwegian Embassy, the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Hellenic Foundation of Culture, in cooperation with The American College of Greece and the support of the National Library of Greece.

On Friday, March 16, Deree Business Week 2018 was concluded with unprecedented high internal and external attendance.
This year’s theme year was «Young Leaders Grow(ing) Greece» and was representing the trend of younger people in positions of responsibility in the corporate world.
Students had the opportunity to participate in presentations and workshops featuring 31 speakers, including Declan Costello, Mission Chief for Greece at the European Commission.
Business Week 2018 was organized by the Academic Societies of the Business School.
Capsella Corallia Innovation Contest 6-7-2017
On October 6-7, 2017, the CAPSELLA Acceleration Program 2018 took place at the Deree Faculty Lounge and was organized by the College Events.
The event was addressed to students, PhD researchers, young scientists, agriculturists, developers, programmers, designers, engineers, finance experts, communication experts, marketeers, business women/men, farmers, entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs-to-be etc., as well as new technology enthusiasts, those excited by the development of innovative tools, solutions, applications, processes and new business models and those willing to participate in sustainable agri-food development.

On Saturday, June 1, 2017, Deree Commencement 2017 was successfully concluded. Deree faculty, students, friends and families celebrated the new beginnings for our graduates. Deree Commencement is a ceremony honoring the hard work of our students throughout the years and expressing Deree’s appreciation for their devotion and achievements.

35th National Selection Conference of the European Youth Parliament Greece was hosted at Deree – The American College of Greece, 7th-9th April 2017. A hundred and thirty (130) Greek high school students from Athens, Patra, Achaia, Aitoloakarnania, 54 European University students from Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Luxemburg, Spain, Italy, Holland, Serbia, Belgium and Austria as volunteers as well as a hundred and twenty (20) Greek highschool Teachers, joined forces for a memorable conference.

Humarketing Conference – September 26, 2016

A fundraising conference organized by Direction and hosted by The American College of Greece, in support of medical expenses for Thodoris Tsemperoulis, a respected industry professional and beloved colleague of many, who is facing health issues.
Proceeds of the conference will be given to the “ΦΙΛΟΚΤΗΤΗΣ” rehabilitation center for covering Thodoris Tsemperoulis’s treatment expenses.
Overseas Art Exhibition

Business Talents Greece 2015-16
On Friday, June 3, 2016, Deree hosted the Business Talents Greece 2015 2016 Final competition. The annual innovative competition provides university students and alumni with the opportunity, through a Business Simulator, to manage a business with their team and to practice and develop decision-making skills.

StartSmart Greece 2015
In October 24, 2015, The American College of Greece hosted StartSmart, a one-day MIT Enterprise Forum conference that inspired, connected, coached, and informed technology entrepreneurs on how to succeed faster and smarter. The forum was organized and produced by MIT Enterprise Forum Greece, which aims to grow, refine, and nurture the Greek entrepreneurial ecosystem. ALS WorldWide Town Hall Meeting
On Monday, November 16, the American College of Greece hosted the ALS Worldwide Town Hall Meeting in the PIERCE Theater. It is an honor for the College to host such an initiative and, by extent, to support the Greek and international ALS community. A community that endures a horrific disease, and yet comes together globally with warmth, in tremendous support of one another. ALS/MDN is the complex and multi-faceted disease of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or, Motor Neurone Disease. The event was held in the style of a true town hall meeting, including members of ALS Hellas Association, and the wider ALS community in Greece, with the audience extending globally, through the live-streaming of the evening. It is important to note that this event was of specific importance, as is it harder for the Greek ALS community to gain access to such information and support.
Greg Louganis on Campus: Breaking The Surface Lecture
Winner in diving and living: The Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis visited The American College of Greece and gave an HIV/AIDS awareness lecture, on Thursday September 17, 2015 at PIERCE Theater. He talked about fighting the demons of prejudice, his coming out and the rights of HIV positive individuals to lead a creative life.
DEREE Commencement Ceremony 2015
More than 300 undergraduate and graduate DEREE students from 17 countries received their degrees and joined the ranks of 40,000 American College of Greece (ACG) alumni. Congratulations, DEREE class of 2015!
Dimitrios Pandermalis, a Professor of Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, supervisor of the Archaeological site of Dion, Pieria and curator of the new Acropolis Museum was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

DEREE Commencement Ceremony 2014
DEREE- The American College of Greece celebrated the graduation of the classes of 2014 with a spectacular Commencement ceremony, at the Aghia Paraskevi campus.
Linda P.B. Katehi-Tseregounis, a Greek-American engineer and university administrator, who, since 2009, has served as the sixth chancellor of the University of California, Davis, was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.

Niki Goulandris, a Greek philanthropist, current vice-president of the Goulandris Natural History Museum and Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Theodore Papalexopoulos, former President of the Federation of Greek Industries (SEB) was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
Peter Thun, Chair to the ACG Board of Trustees (2003-2011) and President of Thun Holdings, was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.

On June 26, 2011 more than 500 members of the graduating classes of DEREE – The American College of Greece, representing 20 countries, received their undergraduate and graduate degrees from ACG President David G. Horner. More than 4,000 relatives and friends filled the bleachers of the College stadium on the Aghia Paraskevi campus.
European Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros, President Carol T. Christ of Smith College and U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis, were awarded honorary doctorates for service to education and public life.
Two graduate and four undergraduate students were honored with awards for academic excellence during the ceremony, which ended with the traditional academic caps thrown into the air by enthusiastic and cheering graduates.

Marianna Vardinoyannis, an UNESCO ambassador, founder of the Foundation for the Child and the Family, President of the Elpida (English: Hope) Association of friends of children with cancer and “Woman of Europe” , was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Andreas Tzakis, MD, PhD, Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Liver and Gastro-Intestinal Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science.
A Woman’s Story: A Conversation With Olympia Doukakis
On January 19, 2010 the American College of Greece hosted the actress Olympia Doukakis on the lecture “A Woman’s Story: A Conversation With Olympia Doukakis”.
Olympia Doukakis (born June 20, 1931) is an American actress. She has won an Obie Award for Best Actress in 1963 for her Off-Broadway performance in Bertolt Brecht’s Man Equals Man as well as an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA nomination for her performance in Moonstruck.
Ms. Doukakis share her personal stories including her experience as an educator. The lecture is introduced by Giannis Vouros, former Member of the Greek Parliament and actor.
