Overview
Participants will learn and develop their Violin and Viola teaching philosophy and methodology. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their techniques and advance their own performance presence and repertoire in a masterclass seminar setting.
Who is this for?
The target group of the seminar is adult learners who have established a proficiency in violin or viola and/or hold a Ptychion or Diploma from a Greek conservatory or other music school.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this seminar, participants should be able to:
- Explain the principals that competent teaching is based upon.
- Write a brief ‘Philosophy of Teaching’ clearly outlining and prioritizing what you want to impart as a music teacher.
- Teach the beginner “set up” including postural issues and bow hold, with consideration on where to start focus.
- Develop and clarify age appropriate strategies and objectives, including the setting of short, medium, and long-range goals with a system for keeping track of student progress.
- Demonstrate knowledge of method books, etudes, technical materials, and solo repertoire for beginner, intermediate, intermediate-advanced and advanced levels, and create a reference table of teaching materials organized by level.
- Develop methods to assess student learning pace, strengths and weaknesses and level for the selection of appropriate studies and repertoire.
- Understand the significance of habits, (mental, verbal, physical) and how they affect teaching and learning.
- Discuss diverse approaches in teaching and learning ways in which both teachers and students can develop critical tools to improve and become independent learners.
- Show progress in the performance of repertoire, etudes or specific techniques brought to workshop in class.

Instructors
Dr. Nancy Bargerstock
Violinist, Dr. Nancy Bargerstock, has performed across the US, in Europe, and in the Far East as a recitalist, orchestral soloist, and chamber musician in major concert venues and music festivals. She received Bachelor and Master’s degrees in performance from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, a Soloist Diploma in viola from the Orfeo Conservatory in Athens, Greece, and a Doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her musical mentors include Ivan Galamian, Sally Thomas, Felix Galimir, Jascha Brodsky, Joseph Gingold, and members of the Juilliard String Quartet.
In the 1980s and 90s, she was an Artist in Residence and Professor of Music at Deree – The American College of Greece, and she held the assistant concertmaster position of the State Orchestra Athens. Nancy taught a whole generation of violin students at the Greek Odeia of Ilioupolis, Skalkottas, Nakas, and Prototipo.
In 1999 Dr. Bargerstock joined the faculty of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University, North Carolina, USA where she is Professor of Violin. In addition to applied violin instruction, she teaches chamber music, pedagogy, literature, and orchestral repertoire. A highlight of her academic career, Bargerstock was awarded the UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016.
Professor Nikos Mandylas
Corfiat Violinist, Nikos Mandylas received his violin diploma with honours, first prize and a medal of distinction at the Hellenic Conservatory with Stelios Kafantaris. He did postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London (’91), and continued his studies at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik where he received the postgraduate diploma in chamber music, in the Melos String Quartet class (’95) and the soloist diploma in Wilhelm Melcher’s class (‘99). He has participated in violin seminars with Z. Bron, and string quartet seminars with the Amadeus, Alban Berg, Bartholdy and Cleveland String Quartets. Nikos also holds a viola diploma with “Excellent” and a first prize from the Phaethon Conservatory (‘07).
Nikos has given recitals and chamber music concerts in Greece, England, Germany, Switzerland, Albania. He has collaborated as a soloist with various orchestras, including Athens State Orchestra, Thessaloniki State Orchestra, Nafplion Festival Orchestra, York University Orchestra, Patmos Festival Orchestra, Athens Municipal Symphony Orchestra and others. Since 2003, Nikos holds the position of assistant concert master of the Athens State Orchestra.
Nikos is an experienced pedagogy and dedicated teacher. He has taught violin and viola at the School of Arts-Music of the University of Surrey U.K. in 2013 at the Municipal Conservatory of Argos and the Corfu Ionian Conservatory Since 2002, and at the Filippos Nakas Conservatory since 2015, and at Deree – The American College of Greece since 2018. His students have repeatedly been awarded at competitions in Greece.
Deree Music Department Head: Professor Leslie Jones
Cellist, Leslie Jones began her music studies in Portland, Oregon. She holds a BM from Manhattan School of Music, and a MA from The City University of New York, Hunter College. Leslie has participated in major music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, the Grand Teton Orchestra Festival, and the International Chamber Music Festival of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and in various festivals across Greece. She has premiered contemporary chamber works at the Athens Concert Hall in association with the Union of Greek Composers under Theodore Antoniou, and has worked with several orchestras including the State Orchestra of Athens, the Kamerata – Orchestra of the Friends of Music (UK tour with concerts at the Royal Festival Hall and the Bath Festival), the Orchestra of Colours (tours in Greece and Madrid), and the Deree Chamber Orchestra. She has recorded two CDs of classical and romantic works with the Deree Piano Trio and a CD of contemporary Greek string quartets with the Athens Bridge Quartet released on Motivo label in 2015.
Leslie is an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Music Department at Deree – The American College of Greece, where she has led the Music curriculum development and has taught courses in performance, history and music appreciation since 1992. Leslie was a Scholar-in-Residence at NYU with the Faculty Resource Network in 2014.

No One Really Taught Me How to Teach, … Or Did They?

This session will combine lecture, discussions, and masterclass work with participating students. Specific readings and practical performance preparation will be assigned for the next seminars.
Collaborative Assignment: Create a reference table of teaching materials including method books, etudes, technical materials, and solo repertoire organized by level for beginner, intermediate, intermediate-advanced and advanced levels.
December 7th
SMART Goals, Developing a Solid Technique
Seminar led by Deree Professor Nikos Mandylas
Seminar participants will follow up on and build upon questions and issues discussed in the previous seminar. This seminar will focus on how to develop the building blocks of a solid technique. This session will combine lecture, discussions, and masterclass work with participating students.
Setting SMART Goals

Teaching and learning workshop on teaching and learning goals and keeping track of progress.
Readings and practical performance preparation will be assigned for the next seminar.
December 14th
Coaching the Independent Learner
Seminar led by Deree Professor Nikos Mandylas
Seminar participants will further the discussions from previous seminars and follow up on questions concerning performance issues, repertoire selection, and how to teach and develop the building blocks of a solid technique. Participants will also discuss the development of critical tools to apply to their own practice and teaching techniques, in order to develop awareness and independent learning skills. This session will combine lecture, discussions, and masterclass work with individual students and will be addressed to all participants.
Habits Define my Future
Short presentation by Deree Music Department Head: Professor Leslie Jones
Presentation on developing greater awareness of how our practice habits shape our destiny. Participants will be given tools to work with and develop positive habits in their personal practice and teaching approaches.
Seminar will close with the participant’s comments and conclusions and a brief written summary of how they feel the seminar learning outcomes have been met.
