Congratulations to the close to 500 student-athletes, coaches and administrators from nine universities and colleges who took part in the ACG International Sports Festival, held March 19-22 at DEREE-ACG on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the founding of The American College of Greece.
“In my view we only have winners in this competition, as we all at The American College of Greece have the feeling that we were lucky to make new friendships and enjoy a great four-day event,” says Theodore Priskomatis, Director of Athletics at ACG.
Overall, 48 teams participated and close to 80 individual matches were played at ACG’s Olympic-quality sports facilities – including a FIFA-designed soccer pitch and state-of-the-art swimming pool – in Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Tennis, and in Men’s Table Tennis.
Taking part were students from The American University of Beirut, The Lebanese American University, The American College of Thessaloniki, the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens’ Medical School, the National Technical University of Athens, Le Monde Institute of Hotel and Tourism Studies, the Technological Educational Institute of Thessalia, and last but not least DEREE-The American College of Greece.
Most Gold medals went to The American University of Beirut, which got 3 – in men’s soccer, women’s basketball, and men’s volleyball – while most overall medals were won by students from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, who won 10 medals (mostly tennis, where its players swept the gold and silver medals in men and women’s), followed by DEREE-ACG with 6 medals, and The American University of Beirut with 4 medals.
Kudos to all the athletes, their coaches and staff for all their hard work and dedication, and congratulations to the home Teams, our DEREE teams in particular, for making us so proud, winning one gold – in women’s volleyball – three sliver – in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, and men’s volleyball – and two bronze medals – in women’s soccer and women’s basketball.
During the Tournament, guests enjoyed a number of opportunities to socialize with fellow students and colleagues from a host of different nations forming new friendships: at a delicious buffet lunch on Friday, at the social evening for administrators and coaches on Saturday night, and at the closing ceremony's buffet, among other mixers.
The festival wrapped up with the awards ceremony Sunday, March 22 in a warm and celebratory atmosphere as new friends bid au revoir to each other and took photos and videos.
Presenting the awards to the student-athletes were ACG Vice President of Enrollment and Administration Dr Dimitrios Andreou, Mr Christos Chouliaras from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Ms Lena Daniilidou, one of Greece’s tope legendary tennis players, Mr Galeb Halimi from The American University of Beirut, Mr Joseph Nar of the Lebanese American University, Mr Stepan Panetemian from The American College of Thessaloniki, Ms Natassa Tsouroufli from the National Technical University of Athens, and Mr Akis Velissaropoulos, owner of the Le Monde Institute of Hotel and Tourism Studies.
“The Tournament was designed to enhance team and school identity, and spirit through the unique interaction of sport,” says Theodore Priskomatis, adding, “We hope to see everyone again soon!”
